Aleksandra Salter, Programm Host on москва 24, interviewed Morten on their Morning Show Moscow Public Access.
Alekssandra: What made you decide to get into the music business?
Morten: Well, I have been singing already in school. Instead of listening to the teacher, I had nothing but nonsense in my head. I remember we had to do something with those... I think they're called „Shaking Eggs“. I really was happy we did something else than just speak of Goldilocks or the Continents on the Globe. I was kinda fascinated of the noise this egg-thing was making and I shook it like... well... - like an idiot and I couldn't help but get up and dance to the rhythm. My classmates of course looked at me like I'm an alien and started laughing. But I continued until the teacher, who just was writing something at the blackboard, suddenly turned around because of the noise - which was disturbing of course. She saw me dancing and shaking that egg and she smiled, telling the class to stop laughing and walked past me saying „Boy, you got talent. You shouldn't waste it.“
From this moment on, I knew I wanted to dance and make music. Be on stage. Be a star – the focus on me. So I learned to dance and sing by self-studying. And well – here I am.
Aleksandra: Were you given any advice when you were first starting out that has proven invaluable? And what advice would you give our viewers that would like to break into the business?
Morten: I can't remember I had been given any advice. All that I can think of – also to tell the viewers – is, that my mom always said I should never listen to anyone telling me I can't do this. I should always keep following my dream, no matter what others might think of me or say about me. So I really don't give a sh*t about any other's opinion.
Aleksandra: How would you describe your creative process? What inspires you to write? Are there any rituals you have when you sit down to start a new song?
Morten: Uh... well. First of all, I think I need to say that I am not the only one writing songs for the band. But when I get inspired, mostly then it's when certain things happen in life – like in my new song “Playing Suck and Blow“ - I remember when my brother was a teen he used to go to those parties and they played those silly games there: „Suck and Blow“ or „Truth or Dare“ and all this sh*t (laughs). I wrote a song about this stupidity. (His brother Adrian gives him a consenting glance and smirks.) Another inspiration are things that COULD happen in life or... (blushes a little and smiles widely) in the most cases it's about love.
I don't have a ritual. I just sit down and write whenever something comes into my mind.
But honestly, I get the most ideas when I'm relaxing in the bathtube of the hotel room in the town we're currently at (smirks). And when I get out of the warm water, I need to write immediately.
Aleksandra: What is your favorite song to perform on stage?
Morten: Currently? „Puke on Me“, because the lyrics are just so funny. I could have been the one writing them, as usually I am the Joker, but this time it was Adrian who wrote the song and the lyrics (points at his brother who smiles). But I am pretty sure, that in future there will be another song – or more songs, I really like. They are all our own songs at least, no?
Aleksandra: Do you sing along with the radio? What is your favorite song to sing along with?
Morten: I do of course (nods). But I don't have a specific or favorite one. I like lot kinds of music, so... No. (stays silent for a few minutes, but then bursts out) Waaaiiit... Without wanting to brag... Singing along our own songs is the most fun of course. (giggles) Daaaamn. Too bad... - we're not even in the radio charts yet. (shakes his head, still chuckling)
Aleksandra: If you could collaborate with anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose?
Morten: Uuh, that's hard. But there are bands out there of course, we really admire and hope that one day we'll be that popular as they are. Our goal is to reach the radio charts of course and get as high in the rankings as possible. Currently we're No. 295 – so there's still a lot of work to do. But I think we had a good start. We kinda know the „Living Undead“ and they are of course a very popular band, though they're playing another genre. But Maik Engelhorn would maybe be a person, we could learn a lot from. So collaboration would be cool maybe. Though we already do that to a certain extent... as professors at the university...
Aleksandra: This a question that is on every fan's mind: what is the silliest, most useless talent you have?
Morten: (laughs) Now that's a very good question. I remember I once played a game with my (caughs) well... - ex. We were just watching TV and since I sometimes get stupid ideas, I suggested to play a game. We should throw Popcorn into the air and the other one should try to catch it with their mouth. I'm very good at it. I don't know yet if I truly beat her, maybe I let her win, but I know I was very good in catching them. So yeah – maybe that's a useless talent (laughs again). Don't try at home: you don't want to clean up afterwards! (laughs hard)
Aleksandra: (laughs with him) But really, is there a message you would like to share with your fans before we go?
Morten: Of course! If you don't already have: buy tickets, come to our shows and buy our first single. You won't regret it! And...- we love you! (blows a kiss at the camera) You are the ones keeping our band alive and helping us getting closer and closer to the top. So we need you! Thank you for your support. You're great! (gives a thumbs up with a warm smile)
But the funniest part was, when Aleksandra asked Morten to do some Dirty Dancing with her. He looked a bit irritated, but then dared. His bandmate Mandy said he reminded her a bit of Johnny Castle.
